A fair question to ask is, “How does kratom compare to alcohol?” Is it a good replacement for alcohol or are its effects completely different? Let’s look at the similarities and differences between the two.
Both kratom and alcohol can improve your mood and make you feel good.
Both lower your inhibitions, although in different ways.
Both can affect your perception.
It is possible to overdose on both.
Alcohol impairs your perception while kratom may enhance it (colors appear more vivid, images are sharper in focus).
There is no hangover the next day from kratom unless you use too much. You would know if you overdose on kratom because you’ll be extremely sleepy and possibly nauseous. (Read this article to learn how much kratom is right for you.)
Alcohol negatively affects your sleep. It’s believed to interfere with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It is during the REM stage that we dream. Missing too much of this stage of sleep can leave us feeling drained and drowsy the following day even if we get a full night’s sleep because our body wants to try to recover that missed time in the REM stage.
Kratom does not have this effect and it can even lead to deeper sleep if used for its sedating properties. Using a slow strain and/or using a larger dose of kratom will cause deep relaxation and can make it easier to fall asleep.
As alcohol wears off it can leave you feeling drained of energy and it can make your mind feel foggy and muddled. As kratom wears off there’s no noticeable crash. It’s a slow, gradual tapering off.
Alcohol can change your personality while under its influence. We all probably know someone who’s an angry drunk or who gets emotional and cries a lot when they’re drinking. On the other hand, kratom “enhances” your personality by reducing anxiety and allowing you to be free to be yourself.
Alcohol lowers your inhibitions by impairing your judgment. How many bad decisions do you think can be traced back to alcohol? Kratom lowers your inhibitions by reducing or eliminating anxiety while still allowing you to make clear-headed decisions.
Alcohol affects your equilibrium and depth perception as well as your reaction time. You shouldn’t drive when drinking. On the other hand, it’s generally safe to drive when using kratom. The one exception is that if you use too much kratom you may get very sleepy, and then it may be dangerous to drive.
The effects of alcohol are intense while those of kratom are subtle. It’s very obvious to tell when someone’s been drinking too much. You can smell it on their breath, they stumble around and slur their speech, or they may even pass out. It’s pretty much impossible to tell if someone is using kratom except maybe if you know they use it and you notice they are less anxious than usual or are more energetic and social than they normally are.
Can You Combine Kratom And Alcohol?
Some people have reported good results from mixing kratom and alcohol. I’m not a doctor and I can’t give medical advice so I’m not sure what the health risks may or may not be. Personally, I’ve found that the effects of alcohol overpower the effects of kratom so I don’t really see the benefit in combining them.
Kratom may not give you the “buzz” that you can get from alcohol but it delivers many of the same benefits without the potential for serious risks that alcohol has.
Kratom can help reduce anxiety and therefore lower your inhibitions while still allowing you to stay in control and make the right choices. It won’t impair your perception, balance, or motor control skills the way that alcohol does.
Kratom can help you feel good without the hangover effects the next day and it won’t rob you of your much-needed sleep the way that alcohol does.
Alcohol has its place and I’m not calling for a ban on it or anything like that. I enjoy an occasional drink myself. I don’t think that kratom can completely replace alcohol in all instances but it can give you many of the same benefits and it can be used daily in situations where alcohol cannot.

If you’re interested in trying kratom and you don’t know where to find it there are many vendors online. Some of the kratom is good and some of it is weak and some vendors even sell kratom extracts or enhanced kratom (which you should avoid). I recommend Happy Hippo Herbals for their high-quality kratom and their fast and friendly customer service.
